One thing that bugs me. History preserved wrongly. Museums in particular should not do it; c'mon they install something and let it sit (credibly) for months or years. Here's a good example, in that Harley Davidson museum I showed a bit ago.

They claim to have on display - not the original, but a dead-on "down to the last bolt" replica of the famous "Captain America" chopper that Peter Fonda rode in Easy Rider. Here it is, and next to it, a photo of the real one used, showing that their replica is NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Look at the headlight, its position, the cross-braces on the handlebar, the handbrakes, the stars on the gas tank, the mirrors, etc etc etc.
Wrong!

Coming soon, I expect to be showing a "Sgt Pepper jacket"exhibit that's purported to be "the original" but is AS wrong as this...

On a day off in somewhere USA, I went to see what attractions were nearby: The Harley Davidson museum lookd good. I'm not a big cycle nut, nor of Harleys (more Indians myself), but went anyway. I had a GREAT time there. Loved the vintage bikes, especially the War era and before. Quite possibly the most enjoyable museum I've been to, period. One of their best exhibits was simply photos of people with their bikes from all eras and styles:

My friends rent this place out, in Joshua Tree. It's called SKY HOUSE. I dream of renting it for a weekend and having friends come out and stay. Would be amazing, the location has a great view, firepit, hot tub, wonderful decor, sleeps about 6, plus heart campers on the floor... Only minutes from the national park, which is an unreal place to visit. Let's go!

Wow, been a LONG time since my last post. Very busy, I guess. This is not so much photos though...

Just now back on the road again. A short-ish time, but I’d rather be home. Not to complain though, it’s things like this that have taken me all around the world a few times, paying for me to see places I would never know. One pic only for this post – I wasn’t going to do any, but it’s kinda a photo (we)blog so I have to put at least one.

Tonight in Denver. Stepped out after dinner and then a movie. Felt like a warm night out, so I walked unguided. It’s this thing I do all over, and tonight I remember so many of the places I’ve been an done this. On the road, I have many friends in the crew, but none that close, and I often end up on my own. Don’t really mind, as I get to go whenever and wherever I want. And “I want” to wander randomly a lot. I love abandoned places, historical spots, factory districts. I actually prefer dark and seedy sides of the tracks to the clean and plain. Walking around shopping malls and city centers seems pointless – almost no surprises unless you really get lucky. They often put us in the city center, so all you see is Nike, Starbucks, Barnes and Noble. Not bad, but just the same all over the world. I’d rather see the old part of town, the factories, working areas, abandoned buildings.

So tonight, walking around I came to realize this comfortable feeling I’ve developed, setting out on my own in the night (usually), not knowing where I’m going or how far. It feels like instinct, like hunters who would set out in search of something – but they only knew it when they found it. And like instinct, I have a strong feeling for where to go, and my senses heighten to everything. (This never happens in busy cities or malls) I can often find my way around with a clear sense of how to get back – yet in a different way, not retracing my steps. I go for miles and often find a circle back to “start”. I’ve only gotten truly lost twice – once with a friend in Vienne, France – we took a bus into town and when we were ready to leave the buses had stopped. We knew it was a 12 mile walk back but, hey – we’ve got legs and time! So we walked – took a wrong turn (we later found what it was) and went 12 miles. Didn’t find the hotel, but saw a lot. Twice – as we had to retrace and head back to the missed turn. Tried to get from there back but it was just as hard to follow the vague memory of the busride in we had taken – do I remember that landmark or not? So, at one point, we called the hotel for a taxi back. Still – a 25-35 mile hike that day made it seem we didn’t give up – we got somewhere, just not our planned place!

A second time was early this year in Sydney, Australia. I went through the local mall area, and the university, the downtown and outward. Kept going into amazing factory districts, and then into rundown neighborhoods with the most amazing old houses. Then circled back and almost found my way, but a few unclear directions had me confused. So I pulled out the GPS on the phone (easy cheat I usually avoid) and walked back – a good 4-5 hour night walk. Great times, and I could now show you where I went.

It seems strange to me that I have good recall of places, but I have VERY clear memories of these streets and hills and railroad tracks I find. I often see amazing sights of interest BUT it’s often night and I have no camera (or only cell phone that doesn’t do “night shots” well). Memories are better in some ways than the “proof” of a photo. But here’s one – empty tonight but the Union Station in downtown Denver (“Travel by Rail”) it says in old neon on the roof. Beautiful inside, from the era when style was more important than profits. Nicely kept up and/or renovated. I probably saw 20 or more equally great views; waterfalls, old railroad cars, a church called “Pillar of Fire”, the capitol, etc. - but only took this one photo.

Maybe someday I will take a friend or family to one of these places and be a good tour guide: Osaka, Dublin (where the huge Guinness plant makes the fog taste like beer), Vienna, Hamburg (my favorite city in Europe), New York City, Paris, Dallas (very rough, not recommended), Little Rock (my least favorite place on the planet), Portland, Locarno (in Switzerland - amazing), London (of course), Strasbourg, Seattle, Verona (Italy), Boston, Mannheim, Geneva, Adelaide, Barcelona, Munich, Tampa, so many others. I’ve been lucky to scour these places by foot. I’m sure there’s a lot I don’t know about each city, but I did make a big dent in knowing them from the street level, places that are not the normal tourist stops. Some amazing sights. More to come even in the next few weeks, I hope…

KIDS HAPPY LAND again - it never gets old! This shot shows how popular it is!

Miss Morgana and I went to Disneyland a week ago, and got the scoop on one of their deep secrets: We were wondering how the posted signs say "Wait Time: 25 minutes" with any accuracy. Here's how - they hand some customer this card and say "Hand this to the attendant when you get to the ride." We thought we could sell the card on ebay to Disney geeks for zillions! Gotta be rare. But we were good and handed it to the clerk at the ride - and he promptly did nothing with it for as long as we watched! Didn't check his watch or anything... accuracy shmacuracy!

One of the things I see around my town that others don't.

Unique! An advertizing URINAL CAKE for Gene Simmons' Family Jewels reality show. When you pee, it triggers it and it SAYS "Gene Simmons Family Jewels... New season on A&E". I never once thought of stealing it from this location, but I wondered how much it would be worth in the future?

Another thing I see in my daily life, that many people might not....

The Eagle has Landed!

So - my good friend Michael Ackerman spotted this on Craigslist, in Orange County (about an hour from here). It was an old A&M Records recording console, custom built in 1969/70. It took a lot of sleuthing to find anything about these, but information finally showed up. The photos of it in the ad were really poor quality - so I (and anyone else looking) couldn't tell much about it.

This is the console, as it sat in storage for a plumbing firm for 26 years...

I finally got better photos, but could not identify it in the few vintage A&M Studio photos that survive. As it turns out, it was used in a rarely-photographed room, called "Mix 2" where people would simply mix - and not record new parts. All the desks were built by HAECO - by their chief technicial engineer at the studios, Howard Holzer, a famous designer and engineer himself. These desks are excellent quality, built of various legendary components; Spectra Sonics, Electrodyne, API, Stephens, etc. Many famous records were done on these A&M desks - Almost all of Joni Mitchell's LPs, Herb Alpert, The Carpenters, Carole King's Tapestry, etc etc.

It took months and several trips to the O.C. warehouse, but we finally got the console up here to L.A. again, it's old hometown. (A&M is actually just up the street from my house). It took a sturdy trailer (we tried trucks and lift-gates - all too small) and a special winch to get it on and off...

The cool trumpet logo is for Herb Alpert, who was the "A" in A&M:

Colorful sucker - isn't it? From the mellow/yellow formica top, to the colored switches, and the custom-made plastic balls on the fader tops! One of the reasons I'm happiest to find it, is that almost ALL vintage consoles have been removed and repackaged from their original situation - the desk and frame are usually changed. This one is intact, including the "belly up to the bar" brass footrail underneath! (See top photo).

One of the few shots of these mixers is this one of The Carpenters sitting at one of the sister Haeco desks made for A&M. Smiling because it sounds SO good, I think! Or maybe because theirs has the colored-ball tops too!

I stored it for now in a space right near a friend's studio. They are gonna refurbish it and get it running. In return I will let them install it in their studio to use. (I have a GREAT mixer already to use - so this will be nice for them, and I can keep my eye on it while it gets used!)

Our sound guy, Paul Ramsay, mixing rehearsal from the next room at his mixing board. I only mention mixing twice in that sentence, because there is a giant indiustrial MIXER behind him left over from the abandoned factory... coincidence? I think not.

Out on tour in Australia. Time to kill, time to post! This is a shot of a small prop plabe we were in. VERY small. But the phone scanning speed is slower than the prop, so you get these amazing image results - incredible really...

This next place was in a hellhole of a town, called Newcastle, Australia. (Motto: Proudly Novocastrian!" Not too catchy...) This establishment had gone out of business, I wonder why...

In my thinking, this probably means to a lot of people "THAT is the place I want to go!" or it becomes the FIRST choice of strippers and drug dealers in the locale...

This is how my day today started - we worked and got in around 1:30 AM to the little Travelodge we are in. And have to wake up for lobby call to get on the bus at 4:40 AM! Ouch. Very hard. Then fly at 6am to another city, drive to venue, set up, wait for show, pack and get to next hotel around 11pm. Not all work, but not your typical life, is it?

The (in)famous Terminal 5 at London's Heathrow airport. They lost about 20,000 bags the first day it opened, just last year. Yikes. But this was even more chilling - the 6th floor up has GLASS floors going to the elevators. Psycho. I know many people (Hi Dad) who would never go near that.

They don't really have earthquakes there, either, but we Californians always think of places you would not want to be in one - Terminal 5, above OR below!

Mmmmm.... dessert at my fave restaurant - Andina in Portland.

WhiteWater rafting....

I was up in Canada for some shows. We had a day off and I got invited to go whitewater rafting the next day. My mind said "NO!" so I said "yes" (this is a new theory I am learning to try). Minds are overprotective watchdogs that worry when there is no need.

Or is there? We were in the mountains, beautifully covered in snow and ice, about 6 hours North of the US border, past Calgary. The rafting adventure was for "advanced" - so, as the 3 of us were all beginners - we felt bold enough to try. Hmmm....

We asked one ranger "what's the worst that's ever happened?" (minds again) The ranger said "someone sprained an ankle". But once in the raft, the same question to a new guide returned "Well, one guy fell out of the boat last year, lost his helmet and we found him drowned a while later. Maybe a headwound or heat attack or something." So.... one person's idea of 'worst' is "sprained ankle" OVER "dead on the bottom of a river"!

What it looks like there when calm (none of these are my photos). I was desperate to hang on or paddle.

Taking pix of the highly foreign countryside in Germany, and THIS happens by the window, I didn't even know it til I developed the film (inside my computer darkroom). I can guess what it is, but I don't like it...

Also in Munchen/Munich, I go to a local record store and - in the front window - they have a show poster from an AIR concert I played there 10 years ago! I asked if they have more or if they would sell it to me. The guy said "No! That's mine - it was a GREAT show...."
And then I told him why I wanted it, but he still wouldn't sell it. (Maybe I can ask The Eels to sell me one of theirs)

We played at the UK's most (in)famous festival; Glastonbury. Great crowd and lotsa great music. But the MUD was SO SO SO SO bad. Not that they can control the weather, but pick a better place for it or something... imagine walking through 14" deep chocolate pudding,

40 Days in the Desert

Well, a week. But it was longer than I've ever had to spend out there. My great friend Annica took me in, her home is right up against the hills (next door to nature). It is a quiet and comfortable retreat. We get along great and she introduces me to her nature-based neighbors of the animal kingdom. They creep down from the hills and check out the water (or smaller critters who came for water - that old story...)

Thanks to good friend Andy Zax, I got to see the last Genesis show. Maybe for ever - this was a small reunion tour. Not as cool as OLD Genesis by far - it went from great to terrible constantly. But some great is better than none great!

VINTAGE Computer Fair !!! Mountain View, CA

This was a weird and fun thing I got in the middle of...

My old CON BRIO synthesizer has never worked in the 11-12 years I've had it. I finally found an "old computer expert" up near San Jose, and he was intrigued to help me fix it. (Inside it's basically 5 computers from 1980). We were hoping to get it ready for his annual "Vintage Computer Fair" a few weeks later...

On the way, I discovered one of the original inventors lived nearby. He gave me his own CON BRIO (now I have two of the four built) to help the project along. We finally got his working with some donations from my machine.

Off to the show... (you can click on the pics and they will get bigger)

The two CON BRIO Synthesizers, side by side. First time one of them has made a sound in over 20 years... my old one on the left, new one (running) on the right.

OLD computers? Yes. You know the Apple II, very famous. But this is the Apple ("Apple 1", but they didn't have numbers before the "II", so just really The Apple.) But more than that, it IS the very first one ever made - #1. In those days, you bought it like this and added your own power and keyboard and TV screen. More on screens later...

This LINC was the first "personal computer" made for one person, not a company or university. The original inventors took three old ones and got one working one as a result! 1962 LINC, big overall winner at the show!

This table was called "The History of Laptops". Exciting, the lines were long!

I think this is the secret new Mac Ibook for next year!

SLICK !!!! But what does it.... uh.... do?

This guy built a computer out of Erector sets and gears. It actually WORKED and did plotting of differential equations and sine waves etc.... popular.

It could have been called "SCREEN CITY" there in the building. Awesome screens all around!

VW Wagon meet, Hannover Germany!

We were called out to work with The Who again, a "one off" show in Hannover. Volkwagen were celebrating the 60th Anniversary or the VW van, or wagon, or "Bulli" as they all call it. Here are some of the sights....

Some BEAUTIFUL vans here, especially these pre-70s ones with the V-front.

This one simply carved from wood, actual size...

Loved this one - a fullsize fiberglass replica on the roof-rack of his original!

My favorite, and the crowd's too: Someone has antiqued their VW into a Huck Finn-style "wooden" riverboat!

This is a LOT of cars.

There is a LOT of parking there.

There are SPACES for parking in this PARK for CARS.

HOT! But I would not feel as safe if THIS fire engine showed up...

And this church was in the middle of Hannover City... I don't want to know. Yikes....

Testing 1,2... a new web log!

OK- Inspired by friends' discussion of online web logs, I decided this would be an easy way to share photos I've taken recently, without having to resort to mass/custom emails and photo archives. Maybe I will make some new friends (yet don't need any new ones, as the old ones still work fine).

This is mostly for pics - and "Images" was taken, so I am using the far more meaningful "IMAGES" by Tyrone Greene title. I bet you know it...

I will not write about the time I was in the KISS movie "Phantom of the Park", or the time my pet Degu bit right thru my hand, the Christian guy in the Hendrix shirt! No - those are stories FROM my friends' own web logs that inspired this; I will fake my own here.

BTW - they are actually not "BLOGs", they are Web Logs, and if you don't have time in your life to SAY "web log" you shouldn't be messing around here - nothing here has value.
